FILMS' EFFECTS ON TECHNOLOGY
Ridley Scott is a perfect example of Danial Fullman’s theory of one who exhibits all the disciplines of design. In the creation of his film repertoire, Scott has consistently created a venue for viable constructs particular to the circumstances of the given conditions to the narratives he’s marketed. He allowed the delegation and creative freedom of set and prop creators while directing all contributors to stay within the confines of the context of what he produced. And most importantly, his success of objectivity over his work and his understanding of his audiences have been proven through the success of his many films such as Blade Runner, and the Alien series. All of which brought forth extensive examples of Design Fiction Technologies. Though, other than the Flame-throwers and the machine guns, most of what audiences saw had not yet come to technological fruition. However, Ridley Scott’s recent contribution, the film Prometheus, is much closer to the reality of current scientific research than most audiences might realize.
In Prometheus the characters are traveling to a distant moon with limited room for food and supplies. Therefor it’s required for the passengers to be put into a long-term hibernation. In the field of Hibernation Genomics, researchers are studying bears and hibernation trying to come up with a safe way to reproduce long-term hibernation in humans .
In another scene one of the main characters preforms a Caesarian section on herself with the assistance of an enclosed robotic surgical device. Though current surgical equipment has a ways to go before reaching the same level of robotic assistance found in the film, companies such as Intuitive Surgical are coming pretty close to such high-tech devices .
Finally, there is a scene in Prometheus where the android, David, is interacting with the alien ship’s computer and navigation. The interface system is gesture based and interactive. Besides seeing similar technology in the film Minority Report, researchers at many universities are discovering different ways to create similar technology .
Ridley Scott’s previous films are in a sense similar to Julian Bleeker’s notion of how scientists get some of their ideas from what they’ve seen in media . However, the film Prometheus is more synonymous with the writings of David Kerby in that Wiley Ley wanted the film, Woman in the Moon, to be as close to scientific fact and feasibility as possible .
